How do I navigate this website?
Now that you know what you can find, how do you use this?
- Look up any name in the county or master
indexes - Each name in the county or master indexes is linked to the
actual image that the name appears on. Click on any name and the tax list image
will be loaded in your web browser. You can save this image to your hard drive
and use it as a record for your genealogy files.
- Browse any tax list you want -
Go to any county or city tax list web page. Go to any tax list that is linked
on this web page. All pages of that tax list are listed on the tax list page.
All image filenames are coded with the tax list page number. Click on any page
you want to view that image. You may have to search several images before you
find the particular page you want. Save any image you want for your
records.
- The information found in these tax lists
is varied - You may find clues about relationships. Sometimes there
is notation about the father, such as "son of Edward". Sometimes the husband is
mentioned, such as "widow of John". It is also possible to deduce a birth or
death year from tax lists. When an individual's property suddenly turns into an
estate then that individual had died during the last year. Likewise when an
individual suddenly appears as a "tithable above 16 years" charged to someone
else of the same last name it is highly possible that this is a son and his
birth could be 16 years before the year of that tax list. This deductive
reasoning requires the review of many consecutive tax list years and is beyond
the scope of this website.
